SA women entrepreneurs urgently need support amid high business exit rates

Date: Apr 22, 2025

Despite the growing number of women across the continent launching businesses as a means of livelihood, a recent entrepreneurial study reveals a worrying trend, many South African (SA) female entrepreneurs are closing their businesses.

This exit which is happening at an alarming rate, comes amid soaring unemployment figures in the country, driving more women to seek self-employment through entrepreneurship. However, without adequate support, many are unable to sustain their ventures.

UVU Africa, a non-profit organisation committed to building inclusive, future-ready societies through technology and innovation, is actively addressing this challenge. Through its UAccelerate programme, the organisation has successfully equipped over 2 000 women with the necessary business and technology skills to compete in the digital economy.

Lara Rosmarin, Head of Entrepreneurial Development and Incubation, says the demand for the programme continues to grow.

“What started as a small programme has now seen the graduation of more than 2 500 women. We currently have a waiting list of nearly 2 000 women eager to join,” she shared.

Rosmarin emphasised the role of technology and mentorship in empowering female entrepreneurs. “At the heart of our programme is access to technological tools and skills. We also surround women with a strong support network, including mentors, which is vital to their success,” she said.

However, the journey is far from easy. Rosmarin acknowledged that many women are forced to abandon their entrepreneurial dreams due to cash flow issues and the challenge of juggling family responsibilities.

“Businesses often fail not because of bad ideas, but because they run out of cash before becoming sustainable. For women, this is often compounded by balancing work and family commitments,” she noted.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is clear, seek support, embrace technology, and build a reliable network. “Find programmes that help you grow where you feel less confident. Surround yourself with mentors who can guide you early in your journey,” she advised.
