Date: Jul 12, 2024

Mozambique Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Carlos Zacarias praised commercial relations between Mozambique and Botswana.

This after Botswana delegation led by President Mokgweetsi Masisi paid a State visit to Mozambique.

Carlos Zacarias,” Mozambique has been supplying electricity to Botswana, and this is a visit in which Masisi will see on site, the potential that we have installed here in Songo at the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant, to continue offering energy to the country and region.

“And naturally we have lined up many energy projects that will involve energy from Cahora-Bassa, energy from other projects, among which I would like to mention the Temane Thermal Power Plant, which is in an advanced phase.”

For his part, the President of the Board of Directors of Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa Tomás Matola, highlights the links between Mozambique and Botswana. “At the moment, the connection between Mozambique and Botswana is through the Southern Africa Power Pool, that is, a type of energy exchange in which countries in the region make sales and purchases of their energy surpluses.

“Therefore, Electricidade de Moçambique has been selling its surplus energy to Botswana through the Southern Africa Power Pool.”

Talks are already underway to implement a tripartite project, involving Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe, which aims to build a deep-water port, connecting the three countries by rail.

This Friday, the last day of Masisi's visit, the President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected in Maputo, where the Heads of State of Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe are presiding, in Maputo province, at the Tripartite Summit on the Techobanine Port Project and the Limpopo Railway Line.

Veronica Macano, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation of Mozambique highlights, ”Much has already been said, however, the Tripartite Agreement had never been signed.

This is important because if we pay attention, this project requires many synergies, mainly resource mobilization and the three countries will be collaborating to make the project a reality.

In terms of advantages, we have no doubt that it will have for the three countries, that need it so much for their development.

Masisi also highlighted his interest in strengthening trade, but what sounded most important was the need to keep the region free from terrorist actions.
