Namibia unemployment soars, experts react

Date: Jan 31, 2025

Namibia’s unemployment rate has climbed to a staggering 36.9% in 2023, up from 33.4% in 2018, according to new data released by the Namibia Statistics Agency.

With a population of roughly 3 million people, the country now holds one of the highest official unemployment rates in the world, surpassing even neighbouring South Africa, where the unemployment rate decreased to 32.1% in late 2024.

Economists and experts are sounding the alarm over the troubling figures, especially the high level of youth unemployment, which stands at over 54% among those aged 15 to 24. Senior economist Dr Omu Kakujaha-Matundu called the situation a "disaster," emphasising that if half of the country's youth remain unemployed, it could spell long-term social and economic consequences for Namibia.

Kakujaha-Matundu has raised concerns about the lack of meaningful policy changes since the country’s independence in 1990. He stated that despite efforts to address unemployment, little progress has been made, with university graduates increasingly unable to secure jobs. He also voiced skepticism over the accuracy of the unemployment statistics, with some experts disputing the reported figures. "The situation is not improving," he stressed, "and the economy continues to grow without generating the jobs that are desperately needed."

While Namibia's economy remains heavily reliant on the mining sector, Kakujaha-Matundu pointed out that this capital-intensive growth model has resulted in “jobless growth.” He believes the country must diversify, particularly by looking into agriculture and value-added industries as potential sources of employment.

With President-elect Netumbo Nandi Daitwa pledging a focus on reducing unemployment and poverty, many are questioning whether the government will take the necessary actions to break the cycle of economic stagnation. Experts argue that without bold reforms, Namibia’s high unemployment rate will remain an urgent challenge.
