Zijin co-operating with Congo probe after cobalt with radiation recalled

Date: Apr 23, 2024

Chinese mining company, Zijin Mining, has announced its co-operation with authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after radiation was found in a shipment of cobalt from its mine in the country, prompting a recall.

The company stated that above-normal radiation levels were detected during a routine customs inspection in Botswana, despite prior testing before export.

As a result, the DRC authorities have suspended the operating licence of Zijin's COMMUS mine pending an investigation into the radiation incident.
