According to BMA statistics, South Africans have largely heeded the call not to visit Mozambique due to the ongoing unrest following the election results.
"In terms of the movement of people out of South Africa (SA) in particular, everything is going well here at the Lebombo Port of Entry into Mozambique.
We have also seen a high escalation of Mozambicans coming into SA primarily to buy food for personal use in Komatipoort and then returning to Mozambique. We don't have a lot of South Africans crossing into Mozambique, and we understand this is because of the political unrest and challenges on the Mozambican side," said BMA Commissioner Dr Mike Masiapato.
Meanwhile, there are long queues of cargo trucks along the N4 towards the Lebombo Port of Entry. Some truck drivers have indicated that processing started moving slowly yesterday. Masiapato stated that over the past 24 hours, more than a thousand cargo trucks have been processed.
"Just in the past 24 hours, we have been able to process a thousand trucks that moved from SA into Mozambique. Up to this point, everything is going according to plan. The corridor is well managed by the Mpumalanga traffic police, the Cross Border Transport Agency, and the Road Traffic Management Co-operation," Masiapato said.
