SA President emphasises Johannesburg's economic significance amid infrastructure concerns

Date: Mar 7, 2025

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has underscored the critical role of the City of Johannesburg in the nation's economy.

During an oversight visit to Gauteng, he lamented the deteriorating infrastructure and persistent service delivery challenges in the city.

Ramaphosa expressed his concerns about the state of Johannesburg, which is set to host the G20 leaders' summit in November this year.

"Johannesburg is integral to the economy of our country as a whole. It is the economic and cultural heartbeat of our nation. In the end, Johannesburg's success is essentially SA's success. When Johannesburg struggles, when it struggles to overcome its own challenges, the effects are felt right across the whole country. Johannesburg today faces enormous challenges that range from financial, and governance instability to rapidly deteriorating infrastructure," Ramaphosa said.
