SA invites private sector to help rescue rail, port infrastructure

Date: May 13, 2025

South Africa (SA) is turning to the private sector in a bid to revive its ailing rail and port infrastructure.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has urged potential investors to step forward with proposals to help overhaul the country’s logistics network.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Rail Conference in Johannesburg, Creecy said the government had launched a dedicated online platform to engage directly with investors. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to rehabilitate logistics systems that have long been cited as a bottleneck to economic growth.

“Our logistics system has reached a critical point,” said Creecy. “We are inviting private partners to play a meaningful role in transforming rail and port operations, sectors that are essential to SA’s economy and its ability to compete globally.”
