SA Deputy Minister hails drop in SA's unemployment rate

Date: Nov 12, 2024

The Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli has commended the latest figures showing a significant decrease in South Africa's (SA) unemployment rate, a promising sign amid the nation's economic recovery efforts.

According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q3 2024, released by Statistics SA, the unemployment rate has dropped from 33.5% to 32.1%, while employment numbers surged, adding 294,000 jobs.

“This marks a significant step forward for our economy,” said Mhlauli.

“The decline in the unemployment rate is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our government working with all relevant stakeholders. The Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan and Operation Vulindlela, initiated by President Ramaphosa, have been instrumental in driving economic growth and job creation.”

The report highlights notable job gains across provinces, with the Eastern Cape seeing an increase of 83 000 jobs, followed by the Western Cape with 75 000. The community and social services, construction, and trade sectors contributed significantly to this job growth.

Youth unemployment also showed positive change, with the number of unemployed youth aged 15-34 decreasing by 171,000, and the youth unemployment rate dropping to 45.5%.

“We are pleased to see these efforts yielding positive results,” added Mhlauli, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting Stats SA in providing reliable data.
