Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts made the appeal while launching an E-waste Recycling Programme at the Makonde Stadium outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo province. She emphasised the importance of educating people about the dangers of keeping unused electronics at home.
"It shows that indeed people are not aware that when you keep these electronics at home, it might be a health hazard. So for us, I think it is going exceptionally well because people are here, and they are waiting to get their electronics weighed and get their voucher,"said Swarts.
She further encouraged rural communities to establish buy-back centres, saying:
"What is important for us is that when we leave here today, we want the rural communities to set up their own buy-back centres so that these e-waste collectors can come and collect from these centres."
