In his weekly letter to the nation, Ramaphosa reflected on the country’s journey since 1994 and said it was time to move with renewed determination to implement meaningful broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE).
Although laws such as the BBBEE and Employment Equity Acts have been in place for years, the income gap between white and black households remains significant, he noted. He expressed concern that many continue to enjoy advantages rooted in apartheid-era exclusion.
Ramaphosa dismissed the idea that the country must choose between economic growth and transformation, calling it a false dichotomy. He challenged private banks to rethink their lending policies to unlock opportunities for black-owned businesses. Furthermore, he urged companies to use their supply chains strategically, not just to boost their BBBEE ratings, but to genuinely empower more black entrepreneurs and diversify their supplier networks.
“SA must act with greater purpose to turn transformation from policy into real change that benefits all its citizens,” Ramaphosa wrote.
