Blow to SA journalism as Media24 cease print operations amidst digital shift

Date: Jun 20, 2024

In a move that marks the end of an era, South Africa’s Media24 has announced the discontinuation of its print publications, including prominent titles such as City Press, Rapport, Beeld and Daily Sun.

This decision is part of a strategic shift towards a digital-first future, but it comes at a significant cost.

The SA National Editors' Forum (SANEF) has expressed deep concern over the closure, highlighting the vital role these publications have played in the nation's media landscape.

The transition is expected to affect up to 400 employees, who face job losses in a substantial restructuring process.

SANEF Secretary-General Glenda Daniels shared a poignant reflection on the situation, stating, "It is very sad. It seems to be part of the trajectory of newspapers all over the world. I'm sorry that the media companies couldn't do something to save them and keep them because a lot of people still need newspapers, clearly. 400 out of 800 jobs are going to be lost. And every time that happens, obviously, at SANEF, we are terribly sad because of the job losses."
