SA mental health crisis: Financial strains impede access to Necessary care

Date: Apr 22, 2024

According to a survey by market research company, IPSOS, over 70% of South Africans (SA) are grappling with stress levels so high that they feel overwhelmed by the demands of life.

This alarming statistic revealed by the World Mental Health Survey,  places SA among the top nations facing mental health challenges on a global scale.

Fatima Seedat, the Development Manager for the SA Depression and Anxiety Group, highlights a dire situation where individuals are struggling to receive the help they desperately need.

The root of this crisis lies in the economic distress faced by many South Africans, which hinders their ability to afford adequate treatment. Despite seeking assistance within the public healthcare system, the scarcity of resources severely limits the availability of support, leaving many without the necessary care.

This financial barrier to mental health services is a growing concern, as it prevents those in need from seeking and receiving help, perpetuating a cycle of untreated mental health disorders.
