Lesotho opens water economy to boost foreign investment

Date: Dec 25, 2024

The Kingdom of Lesotho is set to open its water economy, creating new investment opportunities for the foreign direct investment market.

This initiative aims to attract investors to the country's burgeoning aquaculture sector, which has shown significant potential.

One of the standout projects in this sector is SanLei, a trout producer located on the shores of the Katse Dam in the remote highlands of Lesotho.

Known for its deep, pristine waters, the Katse Dam provides an ideal environment for farming premium trout. SanLei has the distinction of being the first farm and hatchery in Lesotho and southern Africa to achieve the Best Aquaculture Practices certification.

The pristine waters of the Katse Dam offer near-perfect conditions for growing high-quality trout, which has become a sought-after delicacy in South Africa, Europe, and recently, the United States.

The Japanese name "SanLei" translates to "where the mountains meet the sky," reflecting the unique and favourable environment of the farm.

This business initiative is supported by a private entity fund in Lesotho, which aims to improve food security and foster investment that remains fully within the country.

The fund's goal is to develop and expand the aquaculture industry, ensuring it is entirely managed by the Basotho people.

With the opening of its water economy, Lesotho hopes to attract more foreign investment, boost its aquaculture sector, and enhance food security for its population.
