Tah, backed by his home country Mauritania, secured the presidency with over 70% of the ballots in a closely contested election.
Speaking following the announcement, Godongwana acknowledged the calibre of all candidates involved, including SA’s own nominee, Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, who was among the front-runners in the race.
"We had about five capable candidates and therefore we had to contend in an environment like that," said Godongwana. “And I think we wish Mauritania and the new President very well and will throw our support behind the new President.”
