SA’s FlySafair cancels 26 flights amid pilot’s wage strike

Date: Jul 22, 2025

The South African (SA) FlySafair says it had to cancel 26 flights, which account for 13% of its operations amid the wage strike by pilots, which started yesterday.

The airline’s pilots have rejected the airline’s 5.7% wage increase offer, sticking to their demand of a 10.5% hike.

FlySafair insists that it has been negotiating in good faith under the process led by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The FlySafair’s Chief Marketing Officer Kirby Gordon says, “The reality is that’s a 10% increase on basic pay.

Pilots remuneration is quite complex, there are allowances that are considered, there are bonuses and when one looks at the full cost to company increase that they are demanding its 21.1%.”

Gordon says, “These are individuals who are competitively paid compared to other airlines. They are in the top 1% of earners.”
