Former Zimbabwean Minister backs Guevara for UN tourism leadership

Date: May 12, 2025

Walter Mzembi, former Zimbabwean Minister of Tourism and President of the Institute of Cultural Diplomacy, has called on African nations to back Gloria Guevara’s candidacy for a top UN position.

Guevara is in the running for the UN  Tourism Organisation's (UNWTO)  vacant Secretary-General slot, and Mzembi believes there is a need for leadership from the Global South}

Mzembi stressed the importance of Africa stepping up to take its place in global governance, particularly in institutions like the UNWTO, where opportunities for leadership have often slipped away. “It’s time for the Global South to lead,” Mzembi stated, underscoring the significance of supporting Guevara, who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in global tourism.

Mzembi highlighted Guevara’s experience in both the public and private sectors, noting her instrumental role in opening Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector to international visitors. “She’s not just a figurehead; she’s a seasoned expert in the tourism industry, with a proven track record of delivering results,” Mzembi said.

Mzembi also reminded the international community of the 2017 gentleman’s agreement that would have rotated the UNWTO leadership to an African candidate. “We cannot ignore these commitments,” he added. “The tradition of two terms must be respected, and it’s time for new leadership.”

Furthermore, Mzembi pointed to the importance of gender representation in international organisations, stressing that Guevara’s candidacy aligns with the goals of the Beijing Declaration for gender equality. “It’s time for a woman from the Global South to take the helm of global tourism,” he concluded.
