Nigeria burns seized elephant tusks worth $11m

Date: Jan 10, 2024

In a symbolic gesture against poaching, the Nigerian government has burned a pile of elephant tusks worth $11 million that had been seized from illegal traders.

The event, which took place in Abuja, was attended by Environment Minister Iziaq Salako, who said the government was committed to fighting the illicit wildlife rade and protecting endangered species.

According to experts, the global demand for ivory has led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of elephants every year, despite an international ban on ivory trade since 1989.
