Ramaphosa wrapped up his working visit in Kananaskis, Canada, yesterday, where he attended the G7 Summit Outreach Session.

He says he was able to engage the G7 leaders on SA’s readiness to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit later this year.

Ramaphosa says, “We have just concluded our visit to Canada to attend the G7 summit. It has been most meaningful for us, particularly as we are the President of the G20. We had an opportunity to interact with a number of heads of state and governments of various countries.”

“The issues that we put on the table are the issue of climate change and how importantly it should be treated by the global community with regard to our Just Energy Transition. Also, what we intend to achieve out of the G20 with regards to climate change, the financing thereof, but more particularly how we deal with the after-effects of climate change, particularly the floods that we have been suffering from where a number of our people have died, as well as the destruction of infrastructure.”

He adds, “We put that firmly on the global agenda, that there should be sufficient funding for incidents such as those as they happen on a repeated basis, particularly in our sub-region, in the Southern African Development Community), but more importantly, two of our provinces, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, have suffered over the past few years.”
