SA reaches 82% geographic digital access: Official

Date: May 18, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Director General in the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani, says South Africa has so far managed to reach 82% geographic coverage when it comes to digital access.

Today marks World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

The day highlights the role of technology in bridging the digital divide and driving development in underserved African regions.

Jordan-Dyani says they’re considering a number of programmes to cater for part of the population that had been left out.

“In terms of the policy intervention, we have SA Connect and now, we look at the digital public infrastructure programme. So, the SA Connect is what I talk to in terms of making sure that we bridge the digital divide. But we also have another programme on the digital skills, focusing on terms of training. The youth have no problem in adapting. But if we want to everyone online we also need to train even the elderly on how they can use their devices,” she says.
