Zimbabwe lecturers union threatens to escalate strike to 14 State universities

Date: Apr 26, 2025

The Zimbabwe Association of University Teachers (AUT) has issued a stern warning that industrial action could soon extend to all 14 State universities unless authorities address longstanding concerns over lecturers’ poor wages.

The latest standoff began when lecturers at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) staged a job boycott on April 16, demanding a salary adjustment in line with pre-October 2018 earnings. However, the protest took a dramatic turn when police intervened, leading to the arrest of three union leaders.

Speaking to Channel, AUT Spokesperson Professor Obvious Vengeyi expressed frustration over the government’s continued silence. "Our members cannot survive on the current salaries."
