SA appoints former Deputy Finance Minister as Special Envoy to US

Date: Apr 14, 2025

Former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas has been appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as South Africa’s (SA) new Special Envoy to the United States (US).

In this high-profile diplomatic role, Jonas will take the lead in promoting SA’s strategic, economic and political priorities in Washington. His responsibilities will include building stronger ties with US government officials, negotiating on key bilateral matters, and engaging with business leaders to secure investment and foster partnerships that support SA’s growth agenda.

Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the appointment, describing Jonas as “a seasoned leader with deep insight into both domestic economic policy and international engagement.”

“He will play a crucial role in advancing SA’s interests on one of the world’s most important diplomatic and economic stages,” Magwenya said.

Jonas brings considerable experience to the post. In 2018, he was one of four envoys selected by President Ramaphosa to spearhead the country's investment drive. That initiative aimed to attract significant foreign capital and rebuild investor confidence in SA's economy.
