The public spat between the two influential figures has escalated, with Trump recently declaring that he has no interest in repairing their fractured relationship.
The fallout stems from Musk’s outspoken criticism of Trump’s proposed “Big Beautiful” budget bill, which he slammed for potentially adding $2.5 trillion to the US federal deficit. Trump, known for his combative political style, did not take kindly to the remarks and has since launched a series of verbal attacks against the Tesla and SpaceX Chief Executive Officer.
Commenting on the dispute, Makhubela said Musk may be underestimating the political dynamics at play, particularly given Trump’s enduring influence among American voters and his potential return to high office.
“Americans would, in general, resent a very wealthy person who challenges the office of the President and wins. It doesn't matter what problems they may have with Donald Trump. That's one big problem that Musk has to manage,” said Makhubela.
He added that Musk should not overemphasise his own influence when facing off with a political heavyweight like Trump, who still commands substantial sway over Republican supporters and policy decisions.
“Musk is to also understand that the United States President has a lot of powers that can really be used to frustrate some of his key ventures,” Makhubela warned, referencing the vast reach of the executive office in shaping regulatory frameworks, particularly those affecting business and technology sectors.
