The initiative is part of the government's broader effort to ensure the Zambian Kwacha maintains its value against major global currencies.
Announcing the new currency, officials highlighted that the design takes inclusivity into account, with features tailored to be easily identifiable by individuals who are visually impaired. The government emphasised that these notes and coins are not only secure but also built to withstand wear and tear.
Independent Economist Tebogo Kgadima has welcomed the move, describing it as a vital step towards sustainable economic growth. However, he cautioned that updating currency alone cannot stabilise the Kwacha. Kgadima stressed the importance of Zambia fostering sustainable development to strengthen its economy and safeguard the currency's value.
“Beyond enhanced security features, there are deeper reasons for introducing the new currency,” Kgadima noted, underlining the need for a holistic approach to address challenges such as inflation and fiscal management.
