The payment represents just 1% of the overall compensation claim, which totals more than $300 million.
The compensation initiative is a key component of Zimbabwe's Arrears Clearance and Debt Resolution Process, spearheaded by African Development Bank President, Dr Akinwumi Adesina. The programme is part of the government’s broader efforts to clear international arrears and regain economic stability.
Discussing the initiative, Adesina remarked, "One of our commitments as we try to reform the Zimbabwe economy to clear our arrears is really to compensate the former farm owners who lost their farms during the first land reform programme. So we struck an agreement which is called Global Compensation Deed a few years back and now we are trying to honour that agreement."
