Nigeria, Egypt join G20 as permanent invitees

Date: Feb 28, 2025

At the Gruop of 20 (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Cape Town, South Africa (SA), Nigeria and Egypt were officially granted permanent invitee status.

This marks a key step in enhancing Africa’s influence on global economic discussions.

The G20, which consists of the world's largest economies, is vital in addressing issues like economic growth, inflation, and financial stability. Nigeria and Egypt’s inclusion reflects the G20’s commitment to greater African representation and stronger multilateral cooperation to tackle emerging risks.

SA's Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, noted the progress made, despite challenges in reaching consensus on the communiqué. He stressed the importance of creating a framework for future discussions to ensure productive outcomes.

SA’s Governor Lesetja Kganyago discussed managing economic uncertainty and access to affordable funding for emerging markets, an issue particularly relevant to African nations. He highlighted the need for a global financial safety net, including mechanisms like the International Monetary Fund and regional arrangements.

Godongwana said that the G20's decision to include Nigeria and Egypt is a step towards amplifying Africa’s voice in global policymaking, alongside the African Union’s full membership.
