Women in Tourism Regional Congress underway in Sierra Leone

Date: Oct 30, 2024

The Women in Tourism Regional Congress is underway in Freetown, Sierra Leone, with today marking the event’s second day.

This three-day congress, hosted by Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Tourism Organisation, focuses on empowering African women in tourism by enhancing access to education, technology, and financial resources.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabila Tunis, highlighted that the congress’s primary aim extends beyond empowerment, targeting meaningful inclusion in education, innovation, and finance.

“The objective is to provide a platform that addresses real challenges faced by women across Sierra Leone and the African continent,” Tunis said.

“We aim to bring women together, especially those from rural areas, enabling them to showcase their skills, create valuable networks, and gain access to opportunities that were previously out of reach.”

In addition to networking opportunities, rural women in tourism have the chance to participate in masterclasses focused on skills development and product marketing.

These sessions are designed to offer practical tools that support women’s participation in the tourism and hospitality industry, which continues to see a high percentage of women working in lower-paid, informal roles.

The congress addresses this disparity by fostering equitable opportunities. Tunis emphasised the need for targeted support, noting that while empowerment is essential, it must be adapted to the unique needs of African women.

“Women in tourism often face issues ranging from security concerns to educational limitations. This event provides access to mentors within the industry who share experiences and establish long-term partnerships,” Tunis explained.

Another key initiative launched at the congress is the Women in Tourism Leadership Africa Committee, which aims to advance women’s empowerment throughout the continent.

Tunis expressed optimism that initiatives like this will play a crucial role in driving progress on sustainable development goals in Africa’s tourism sector.
