Unlicensed mining intensifying in Ghana

Date: Jun 5, 2025

Director of Extractives at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, Marcena Hunter says unlicensed mining is intensifying in the Western and Savannah regions of Ghana.

This is contributing to the country's artisanal and small scale gold mining sector's rapid expansion mostly outside legal oversight.

The illicit mining practice is driven by limited job opportunities.

According to market advisers Fitch Solutions, unemployment in Ghana, in 2025 is expected to remain at an average of 4.0%, maintaining this level over 2026.
