SA extends nuclear station's unit' operating life by 20 Years

Date: May 5, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has announced that the country’s only nuclear power station, Koeberg, has been granted approval to operate Unit 1 for another 20 years.

The confirmation came during an Eskom headquarters briefing, where the power utility updated the nation on the state of the electricity grid ahead of the winter season.

Ramokgopa praised Eskom’s Head of Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, for his leadership in securing regulatory approval for the extension.

"Koeberg Unit 1 has now received the long-term operating go-ahead from the regulator, and I thank Mr Nxumalo, who has been at the apex of this effort. This ensures we can extend the unit’s life by two more decades," Ramokgopa stated.

The Minister also expressed confidence that Eskom would successfully extend the life of Koeberg Unit 2, ensuring continued generation capacity for the country’s power grid.
