SA's Transnet shifts focus to local manufacturing of port equipment

Date: Jun 11, 2025

South Africa's (SA) State-owned rail transport and ports management company, Transnet, says it is introducing innovative approaches to the manufacturing, refurbishing, and maintenance of port equipment.

This is in a bid to diversify its manufacturing capabilities. The SA company is working to reposition itself as a manufacturing and refurbishment business, with a focus on port and maritime-related equipment such as port trailers, haulers, and locomotives.

Transnet Engineering Manufacturing and Maritime Manager, Tshwanelo Tswaai, was speaking at Transnet's engineering plant in Salt River, Cape Town.

"For instance, the hauler. Hauler to us is new. We've always bought haulers for the other ODs, or ODs bought haulers for themselves, but this one we've built internally from design, from scratch. And that hauler, as I said, is currently in testing and will be deployed once all the testing has been completed," said Tswaai.
