The conference, which marked two decades of the event’s existence, was held under the theme “20 Years of Shaping Mining in the DRC: Creating a Roadmap for the Future, Vision 2025–2030.” It attracted government officials, industry leaders, and business representatives from across the continent.
Addressing the forum, Shani Engelbrecht, Global Portfolio Manager at AECI Mining Chemicals, said strengthening local partnerships would be key to building a more sustainable and profitable mining sector in the country.
“In our view, localisation isn’t just a consideration, it’s essential,” she said. “Through partnerships with Congolese resellers and sourcing from within the country, we are embedding our operations into the local economy.”
Engelbrecht explained that this approach reduces dependence on imports, cuts logistical costs, and contributes to stronger relationships with local communities. “But more importantly, it promotes inclusive economic growth. If mining is to truly benefit the DRC in the long run, it must leave behind lasting value,” she added.
The DRC is one of Africa’s most mineral-rich nations, and the event highlighted both the opportunities and the ongoing challenges in the sector – including infrastructure gaps, regulatory clarity, and the need for skilled local labour.
The forum concluded with renewed calls for the mining industry to align itself with national development goals, while ensuring local communities are active participants in the country’s resource economy.
