SA Competition Commission calls for transparency in fresh produce pricing

Date: Jan 13, 2025

The Competition Commission's Fresh Food Market Inquiry in South Africa (SA) has highlighted a significant issue in the fresh produce market, the lack of transparency in unit pricing per kilogram or gram.

This lack of transparency distorts competition, as consumers are unable to compare prices between retailers effectively. The inquiry found that the absence of clear pricing on a weighted basis impedes, restricts, or distorts competition.

Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Commission, Hardin Rantshisusu, presented the findings of the Fresh Produce Market Inquiry in Pretoria this morning. The inquiry's findings have prompted calls for greater transparency in the pricing of fresh produce to ensure fair competition and consumer protection.

Retailers, including Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, the SPAR Group, Food Lover's Market, and Massmart, have been instructed to display pricing on a "per 100 gram" basis for eleven prioritised fresh produce products. This requirement is in addition to any other pricing display chosen by the retailer.

The Commission has urged these retailers to extend this pricing transparency to all other fresh produce sold in their stores, ensuring that the weighted price is displayed in a manner that is clear and easily identifiable to consumers.

The implementation of these displays is expected to be completed within 12 months. This move aims to empower consumers with the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions and to foster a more competitive market environment.
