SA urged to diversify energy mix as demands grows

Date: Mar 26, 2025

Energy Advisor in the Presidency of South Africa (SA), Silas Zimu, has urged entrepreneurs facing challenges in the energy sector to deepen their industry knowledge and contribute to diversifying the country’s energy mix.

Speaking at the ongoing Solar & Storage event in Johannesburg, Zimu highlighted the importance of innovation in meeting South Africa’s energy needs. The event has drawn 20 000 attendees, 650 exhibitors, 200 speakers, and representatives from 40 African countries.

Experts at the event warned that SA can no longer rely solely on coal and Eskom to meet its growing energy demands. They emphasised the need for a diversified energy mix to ensure long-term sustainability and stability.

Girish Paliwal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of Raydean, India, stressed the importance of early adoption of solar energy. “If you start using solar resources now, you will maintain ecological balance and improve public health. It is always better to implement clean energy solutions early rather than trying to reverse environmental damage later,” he said.

As international companies seek entry into the Southern African market, regulatory compliance remains a significant hurdle. Patricia Schroder, CEO of Circular Energy, highlighted the challenges businesses face in meeting legal requirements.

“The legislative framework is in place, but compliance can be complex. Our organisation assists companies with these requirements, ensuring a transparent and efficient process,” Schroeder explained.

With SA holding the G20 presidency, Zimu believes the country has a unique opportunity to shape a lasting legacy in the energy sector. “Energy is the most critical factor in Africa’s development. Every leader who visits SA asks for two things: power and airports. Power is always the number one priority on the continent,” he noted.
