Transnet appoints Michelle Phillips as Group Chief Executive Officer

Date: Feb 29, 2024

Michelle Phillips has been named as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnet, the state-owned freight transport and logistics company.

This was announced by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on Monday. Phillips has been acting as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) since Portia Derby resigned from the position in September 2020.

Phillips has a long history with Transnet, having worked in various roles for over 20 years. She was the Chief Executive Officer of Transnet Pipelines, the division that operates the country's fuel and gas pipelines, before taking over as the acting GCEO.

Gordhan said that he was confident that Phillips would provide strategic direction and leadership to Transnet, which is a key player in the economy and the transport sector.

Gordhan also appointed Nosipho Maphumulo as the Group Chief Financial Officer of Transnet. Maphumulo has been with Transnet since 2017 and has served as the acting Chief Financial Officer since July 2020. Gordhan said that he expected the new appointments to strengthen Transnet's governance and financial management, as well as to drive its ongoing reforms and transformation.
