Kenya China visit sparks concerns over US relations

Date: Apr 24, 2025

Kenyan President William Ruto's four-day state visit to China has raised questions about the potential impact on Kenya's relations with the United States (US).

The visit comes amid heightened global economic tensions, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio abruptly cancelling his planned trips to Nairobi and Addis Ababa.

Dr Alex Kamau, a Lecturer and Business consultant, has warned that Kenya's growing alignment with China could have significant consequences for its trade balance with the US. Speaking to Channel Africa on the matter, Kamau highlighted the risks of a pro-China stance, particularly in light of historical US trade policies.

"There are likely to be consequences for the choice that Kenya has taken," Kamau stated. "When Trump was implementing reciprocal tariffs, it was about those countries that were not giving more business to the US. It was about how much the US is exporting to you as a country versus how much we are importing from that country."

Kamau explained that if Kenya continues to strengthen its ties with China, it could lead to a shift in trade dynamics. "If Kenya is more pro-China, it means that instead of buying so much from the US, it will be buying more from China. That will adversely affect the trade balance between the two countries," he added.
