The consortium includes Goldrush, a gambling company linked to well-known businessman Sandile Zungu. Sizekhaya Holdings was selected from eight competing groups that submitted bids for the licence.
On Monday, Minister Parks Tau said he had received a report from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) confirming that negotiations with Sizekhaya had been successfully completed. He thanked everyone involved in the talks for their timely efforts.
However, Tau noted that the licence award has already sparked legal challenges. The matter is currently before the High Court, and the minister is considering an appeal against the court’s ruling after seeking legal counsel.
“This announcement brings to a close a long and difficult evaluation process involving eight applicants for the fourth National Lottery Licence,” Tau said.
The decision marks an important milestone for SA’s lottery sector and is expected to introduce fresh competition and opportunities.
