Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, shared the announcement during a visit to Gautrain Park Station in Johannesburg. She encouraged commuters to register for KlevaMova, a newly introduced initiative that offers a 50 percent discount on train fares to qualifying residents.
To promote the scheme, Gautrain is offering free rides this weekend to anyone who registers for KlevaMova in advance at any station except O R Tambo International Airport.
The programme is designed for low-income households, students under the age of 25, school learners, pensioners, senior citizens and individuals who receive disability grants.
Diale-Tlabela said the aim is to ensure more people can benefit from Gautrain services. She explained that the train system is one of the province’s key public assets which residents will fully inherit in March 2026. She acknowledged that ordinary people across Gauteng have long faced challenges accessing the Gautrain, largely due to household income constraints and the high cost of daily transport.
The initiative is expected to reduce transport costs for working-class communities and promote greater use of public transport across the province.
