Date: Oct 7, 2024

Telkom Chief Executive Officer Sirame Taukobong, in an address at the Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference, issued a stark warning about the potential societal disruptions posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking to industry leaders in Mpumalanga, Taukobong emphasised the urgent need for South Africa to adapt its educational policies to brace for the AI era.

Taukobong highlighted the critical role of education in shaping the future of the nation, pointing out the current misalignment between policy-making and the educational needs of the next generation.

He stressed the importance of empowering educators to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities presented by AI advancements.

"Investing in AI and advanced teaching methods for primary education is essential, but it must be balanced with adequate funding for education," Taukobong stated.

He expressed concern over budget cuts in education, which could undermine the country's ability to equip young minds for a future dominated by AI technologies.
