'Practical solutions key to African women’s financial empowerment'

Date: Mar 28, 2025

Women across Africa continue to face significant barriers in accessing funding, building wealth, and fully participating in the economy.

To address these challenges and drive meaningful change, the Black Distributors Trust (BDT), in collaboration with Old Mutual, hosted the Women Financial Inclusion Summit 2025.

Speaking at the event, Zimkhitha Gova, Founder and Executive Chairperson of the Africa Women Financial Inclusion Initiative, stressed the urgent need for structured discussions and practical solutions. She pointed out that before their initiative, conversations around women’s financial inclusion in South Africa were almost nonexistent.

Gova highlighted several obstacles women face, including difficulties in securing funding due to a lack of collateral and biases in financial institutions. She referenced a Stellenbosch University study indicating that women receive far less funding than men, often due to misconceptions about their financial management abilities. Limited financial knowledge also plays a role in hindering wealth creation and sustainability for many women.

The summit focused on key areas such as skills development, digital transformation, and leadership to help women take control of their financial futures. Gova highlighted that equipping women with the right financial education and investment strategies is vital for bridging the wealth gap.

Looking ahead, the Africa Women Financial Inclusion Initiative plans to sustain its efforts through forums, youth summits, and policy discussions.
