The 31st edition of the Invest in African Mining Conference is underway, bringing together influential leaders and innovators to discuss key issues surrounding sustainability, economic growth, and Africa’s potential as a global mining powerhouse. This year’s edition shines a spotlight on creating long-term economic value through sustainable practices, an issue that has never been more urgent for the continent's future.
In a bold move, SA has simultaneously launched the inaugural SA Diamond show, a platform designed to position the country as a global leader in diamond production, cutting, and jewellery manufacturing. The timing of this dual event is no coincidence; as global interest in African resources intensifies, the SA government and industry leaders are determined to harness the continent’s untapped potential to not only mine but also add value to its natural treasures.
Nosiphiwo Mzamo, Chief Executive Officer of the State Diamond Trader, shared her excitement about the show’s purpose. “For over a century, SA has been at the forefront of the diamond industry. Now, we are showcasing our craftsmanship, innovation, and the sheer potential of our local industry to a world eager to engage with Africa’s resources,” she said.
The event has already received rave reviews. Attendees, many of whom have travelled from overseas for the mining conference, have been particularly impressed by the quality and originality of the SA diamond creations on display. “It’s long overdue that we have this kind of platform to celebrate South African diamonds, especially with the world gathered here for the mining discussions,” Mzamo explained.
While SA currently ranks third in global diamond production, efforts to increase this ranking are already underway. Enhanced exploration, new mining technologies, and collaborative efforts with other African diamond-producing nations are central to these ambitions. The key to growth, according to Mzamo, is not just exporting raw diamonds but adding value within SA, through cutting, polishing, and jewellery manufacturing, creating jobs, boosting the economy, and increasing foreign investment.
Additionally, the event serves as a timely opportunity to promote ethical sourcing and sustainable practices within the diamond industry, which have become critical factors for modern consumers. The SA Diamond Show has adopted international standards for ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility, promising greater transparency for buyers.
