G20 summit seen as chance to boost tourism, rebrand SA

Date: Jul 2, 2025

As South Africa (SA) prepares to host the G20 Summit this November, key players in the hospitality and tourism sector are speaking out.

They want the event to be used not just as an economic booster, but also as an opportunity to reshape global perceptions of the country.

The high-level gathering, which brings together the world’s major economies to deliberate on pressing global financial and political issues, is expected to attract a wave of international delegates and visitors. According to the Africa Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA), the summit could inject as much as $68 million into SA economy.

Sandra Kneubuhler, Managing Director for Africa at the Radisson Hotel Group, says the hospitality sector must seize the moment to showcase the country’s warmth and diversity.

“SA is one of the genuinely friendly countries in the world to visit,” she said. “You hear it again and again from so many travellers, how nice it is to visit and how welcoming and friendly our people are. That is our superpower as a country, if I’m honest, and we should never lose that.”

Kneubuhler added that this spirit of hospitality is deeply rooted in the country’s Constitution, which underlines inclusivity and respect for all. “We genuinely welcome everyone, from every walk of life,” she said.

Industry stakeholders say the summit presents a rare chance for SA to promote its tourism offerings to a global audience, especially in the wake of recent economic challenges and reputational hits linked to governance and infrastructure issues.

With months to go before the summit, preparations are already under way in host cities, with hotels, airports and public facilities working to ensure a seamless experience for guests. The tourism sector hopes that beyond the immediate financial gains, the G20 will help restore SA’s image as a premier global destination, welcoming, resilient, and full of possibility.
