SA Auditor General urges parliamentary action on non-compliant municipalities

Date: Feb 25, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Auditor General (AG), Tsakani Maluleke, has called on Parliament to intervene against municipalities that have failed to submit their annual financial statements for the 2023/2024 financial year.

In a letter dated February 14, 2025, Maluleke urged the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, to exercise her legislative authority to address the issue.

According to the AG, nine municipalities have not complied with the submission of their financial statements for the year under review. The Free State Province accounts for the majority, with six municipalities yet to submit their statements. Maluleke has recommended that the Speaker refer her report to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts for further scrutiny and action.

Maluleke has also issued material irregularity notifications to some accounting officers, accusing them of delaying accountability processes due to the non-submission of financial statements. This step underscores the need for greater accountability and transparency in local government financial management.
