SA Medical Association looks to integrate AI into healthcare

Date: Nov 30, 2024

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has taken a bold step in healthcare innovation by hosting a groundbreaking two-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) Healthcare Roundtable.

Held at the Huawei Business Park in Woodmead, Johannesburg, the event was aimed at exploring the integration of AI into South Africa’s healthcare system.

With a focus on ethics, inclusivity, and responsible implementation, the discussions addressed the unique challenges of the sector while exploring AI's transformative potential.

Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa, Chairperson of SAMA, highlighted the significance of the initiative: “This roundtable is a pioneering effort to place clinical and ethical leadership at the forefront of AI applications in healthcare. Our objectives are twofold: to educate a critical mass of doctors and healthcare professionals on AI’s role in healthcare and to explore how technological innovations can bridge gaps in access to care.”

The roundtable commenced with dynamic discussions on AI’s potential to revolutionise healthcare. Key topics included ethical frameworks, innovative AI applications, and strategies to address existing disparities in the healthcare system.

Day one laid the groundwork, underscoring AI’s opportunities for improving diagnostic accuracy, optimising resource allocation, and addressing inequalities in underserved areas. Day two expanded on these foundations, focusing on fostering local expertise, collaboration, and the regulatory and ethical considerations required for AI adoption.

Dr Mzukwa noted: “These discussions are not just for healthcare professionals but for society as a whole, as we navigate the complexities and opportunities AI presents.”

Integrating AI into healthcare brings its share of challenges. Ethical concerns such as data privacy, confidentiality, and equitable access to AI tools were at the forefront of discussions.

Dr Mzukwa explained the critical importance of maintaining public trust: “Healthcare involves personal, sensitive information. We must ensure this data remains confidential and is used responsibly to prevent mistrust. Moreover, AI can be misused, as seen in other contexts, such as in conflict zones. A robust ethical framework is essential to safeguard patients’ rights and ensure AI applications are socially acceptable.”

The roundtable attracted experts from diverse sectors, including academia, multinational corporations, and local industries. Notable speakers included international AI specialists from the United States and the United Kingdom, alongside South African professionals.

One of the key addresses was delivered by Professor Blade Nzimande, Minister of Science and Innovation, who commended the initiative: “Collaborating with professional associations like SAMA will be instrumental in driving ethical and innovative AI solutions for healthcare.”

SAMA firmly believes that AI can help address some of South Africa’s most pressing healthcare challenges, including resource shortages and disparities in access. The association emphasised the importance of affordability and usability in AI adoption to ensure equitable healthcare for all.

Dr Mzukwa reiterated the association’s vision: “AI has the potential to enhance healthcare delivery, but it must be accessible, user-friendly, and integrated with ethical considerations. We aim to build a system where technology supports healthcare professionals and ensures patients receive the best treatment.”
