The BMA's Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, praised the border guards for their exemplary service which underscores the agency's dedication to securing the nation's frontiers and maintaining the integrity of the law.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours when a 39-year-old South African citizen, whose identity had not been disclosed, attempted to illegally cross into eSwatini with $24 000 in undeclared currency.
The funds were concealed within a nondescript black plastic bag, raising suspicions among the alert BMA personnel.
Upon discovery, the money was promptly confiscated, and the individual was detained for violating the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, No. 38 of 2001.
This act underscores the BMA's ongoing efforts to combat illicit financial flows across South Africa's borders, a commitment that Dr Masiapato reaffirmed in his statement following the seizure.
