Speaking at the African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, Maile highlighted that illegal mining is prevalent in several areas within Gauteng, a province that hosts approximately 160 mining companies and serves as the country's economic hub.
Maile called for a lasting solution to the problem, emphasising the need to formalise the sector.
"We are concerned about illegal mining and that is why we are saying it is time to have a conversation. However, we need to formalise the sector. How do we help those who are already doing this to stop illicit mining and regulate it properly, to properly contribute revenue, and fight poverty and unemployment?" Maile said.
