Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau stated that these strategies were already underway before the United States (US) administration’s recent announcement of a 30% tariff on imports from SA.
"We are looking at diversifying. We had long started the process of diversifying our trade partners, including in citrus," said Tau.
He referred to previous challenges with the European Union regarding what SA considers unreasonable restrictions on citrus imports.
Despite these obstacles, the country has actively engaged with the United States in citrus trade while identifying alternative markets for its citrus growers.
"There are different markets we continue to work on," Tau added, underscoring SA’s proactive approach to strengthening its trade resilience.
