Global collaboration urged to bridge digital divide at G20 summit

Date: Apr 7, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has called for a united global effort to bridge the digital divide.

Speaking at the opening of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group on Monday, he emphasised the importance of meaningful connectivity, inclusive digital innovation, and ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI) in fostering sustainable economic growth.

Held under the theme "AI and the Digital Economy," the summit held in SA's Eastern Cape province, brought together representatives from 19 countries to explore strategies for empowering small businesses, advancing digital public infrastructure, and enhancing global access to digital services, including payments.

Malatsi highlighted key priorities, stating, "The promotion of meaningful connectivity and digital public infrastructure is essential. We must enhance access to digital services and payments, improve people's access, and leverage expertise to develop AI that is not harmful but promotes efficiency and productivity."
