MEDIA STATEMENT

SABC COMMEMORATES THE ICONIC 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP THROUGH #REMEMBER2010 CAMPAIGN

Johannesburg, Thursday, 11 June 2020 - The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), through its sports platform, SABC Sport, has launched a new campaign to commemorate ten years since the broadcast of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The campaign #Remember2010, is in line with the SABC’s commitment to keeping the public entertained particularly under the current lockdown climate.

The public service broadcaster’s month-long campaign marks a decade since the global spectacle of the FIFA World Cup was first hosted on African soil.  As the official broadcaster, the SABC played a central role in leveraging the power of its TV and Radio platforms to become the eyes and ears of all South Africans, as we rallied behind the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana with the ‘Feel it, It is here Campaign’.

It is therefore fitting that the public broadcaster remembers 2010 by delivering sports content that meets  its public mandate while  serving the millions of South Africans who rely on it for entertainment. Through the #Remember2010 drive, the audience and football loving supporters will:

  • Remember the moment Africa stood up, and raised its hand to be counted in the global football fraternity;
  • Remember the first goal of the soccer World cup on African soil, a moment that sent Bafana Bafana into a diski dance, when “Philip” was here;
  • Remember BaGhana; and
  • Remember when the Spanish were crowned World Champions on African soil.

Audience and viewers will be invited to share their memories of the 2010 FIFA World Cup by sending 30 second voice notes, pictures or videos via WhatsApp to +27 079 445 0354. Selected memories will be used in radio promos as well as digital platforms to drive the celebrations for the duration of the campaign.

SABC Sport General Manager Gary Rathbone stated &quotIn 2010, the world came home and SABC was the stage on which the greatest sporting spectacle was enjoyed by millions of our people. The SABC stands proud in delivering public value to our audience and commercial partners through the content that not only unifies all corners of our country, but celebrates the diversity and colourful characters of this nation and the world beyond our borders.&quot

SABC Sport is calling on all South Africans to wear their favourite football teams’ jersey on Fridays for the next month, starting 12 June.

Fans can also look forward to a selection of FIFA World Cup matches that will be broadcast on SABC platforms from this weekend. In doing so, South Africans will be able to relive those wonderful memories and share these with the next generation.

A full programming schedule for the campaign is available on www.sabcsport.co.za or @sabcsport on twitter and Facebook.

The way we were.....

FEEL IT! THE 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP

Venue: South Africa

Contact: SABC

Date: 2010

Summary: The ‘Feel It’ campaign has gone beyond the South African borders, penetrated through to the African States and reached various international countries, sending expatriates (not to mention tourists who have experienced, and some, heard of our hospitable country) back to their sweet home, the sunny South Africa, in time to enjoy the festivities brought by the 2010 Soccer World Championship.

Event Details:

 The SABC is no stranger to World Cup Events coverage, but this one is different. Never in the history of Africa has the African soil hosted a football tournament of this magnitude!  This premier international football tournament takes place from the 11 June 2010 to the 11 July 2010 in South Africa.

If you haven’t felt the SABC’s excitement as an official broadcaster of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, you are yet to visit the SABC website, tune into one of the SABC channels, or listen to any of our 18 radio stations. The vibrancy on the airwaves and elsewhere is so alive you won’t want to miss out!  The SABC has exclusive rights to provide broadcast signal to all official FIFA Fan Fests and Public Viewing Areas (PVA’s).

Who, on the 16th of January 1961, would have envisaged that the 2010 FIFA World Cup Official Broadcaster would be, today, committing to living its dream, by providing South Africans with 64 games during the biggest soccer tournament, live across all 3 TV channels and 18 Radio stations in all the country’s 11 official languages, in line with its vision to Broadcasting for Total Citizen Empowerment?

Who would have known that the technological advancement, whose pace is expanding as never before, would have put the SABC in a proud position of owning, amongst its assets, a fleet of state-of-the-art high definition outside broadcast vans (HD OB vans)? Each of the 5 OB vans weighs 30 tons, wired for 24 HD cameras, and, need I say, ready for action! Four of the new OB units are identically equipped with Riedel Digital Artist Matrix Intercom. Two of these vans were used for the 2009 FIFA Confederation Cup broadcast, while a third one was utilized to cover the FIFA World Cup Final Draw. Our OB units will be used to broadcast the 2010 FIFA World Cup, starting from the FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on the 10th of June, 2010, to the Opening Ceremony at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, until the last day of the World Cup events.

As a visitor in South Africa, you’ll too undoubtedly feel the ‘Siyanqoba Spirit’ (The winning spirit) as you support Bafana Bafana defeating Mexico (wishful thinking from proudly South African citizens) on day 1 of the spectacular games. Let the 2010  FIFA World Cup bug bite you! Feel it, you are all welcome! Feel it;  and yes, we are winning!

   Let's meet at SABC SPORT for the 2010 Schedule!
