SABC Turns 84

Commemorating 84 Years of Broadcasting

Sharing a message with SABC first citizens, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the SABC, Mr Madoda Mxakwe, had this to say:

"As the SABC turns 84 tomorrow, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the journey so far, and take pride in the contribution the institution has made in the country and the continent. Since its establishment in 1936, the public broadcaster has played varied roles to different government arrangements, including the tumultuous apartheid period, and influencing society in divergent ways. The last two decades have seen the institution radically transform into a truly public broadcaster dedicated to informing, educating and entertaining the county’s citizenry.

Over the past decades, the SABC has evolved from being an exclusively broadcast service to a modern multimedia content services company, owing to its plethora of digital publishing platforms. It is during this period of transformation that the public broadcaster has distinguished itself as an indispensable primary source of informative, educational and entertaining programming to millions of South Africans, in their preferred languages, and on their preferred platforms. In the process, the SABC has achieved several milestones, including the establishment of the SABC News Channel, and most recently the launch of the SABC Education Channel."
