Digital law company urges Meta to prioritise child safety after court order

Date: Jul 18, 2025

The Digital Law Company has urged social media giant Meta to make the safety of children its top priority and to comply with a  Johannesburg High Court order in South Africa.

The court ordered Meta to take down WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles that depict school children involved in sexual acts. This follows a legal case brought against Meta by the Digital Law Company on Monday, after parents reported that explicit videos and images of their children were being circulated by an unknown individual.

“It is such a serious matter. I don't think there is anything more important than saving lives,” said Rupert Candy, Attorney for the Digital Law Company.

“We have seen the damage that has already been done with the deaths of these young children and the one that we know of who is currently in a coma. So it is a massive matter in respect of public policy. I think it is also a wake-up call for a lot of parents.”
