Concern over rising bus fatalities in SA

Date: Mar 12, 2025

The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) in South Africa (SA) has voiced serious concern regarding the increasing number of fatal bus accidents on the nation’s roads.

In a recent incident, 13 people tragically lost their lives when a bus veered off course and overturned in Kempton Park, located in the Eastrand area of Gauteng province. Just this morning, 19 learners were injured when their bus collided with the rear of a truck in Wadeville, also in Gauteng.

MISA Spokesperson Sonja Carstens highlighted the urgency of addressing this rising trend. "This tragic bus crash in Ekurhuleni follows a deadly crash in the Free State provinve, which claimed 10 lives, as well as another incident in KwaZulu-Natal provinve where eight people were killed. Our roads should not be places where lives are lost in this manner. Drivers must remain vigilant, and we urge all motorists to exercise greater patience, particularly in stormy weather," she said.

Carstens pointed out the critical need for heightened road safety awareness, especially in light of the severe weather conditions that frequently contribute to hazardous driving environments.
